Home, Home on the Range

Homebuilding 3
August - September 2006

Afternoon temperatures broke the 100 degree mark for nearly the entire month of August. During this time the occasional cloud or breeze was a major blessing. Yet the Peterson crew kept at at it, coming to the work site predawn and working until it got dangerous, usually around 2 - 3 pm but as early as 12:30. Amy and I were amazed they lasted that long -- we took to our air-conditioned offices and stayed there.

That's The Big Guy, Rod Peterson, and his big, sweet gal Georgie in the photo to the right. Georgie wants somebody to throw something she can fetch. Right now would be good.

Below, the rafters go in, followed by the loft framing, roof and insulation -- the temp dropped 5 degrees even with open doors and windows and no breeze. Kevin designed a handsome fireplace that will heat the house. Windows arrived and were installed. They are highly energy-efficient and are designed to route prevailing winds throughout the house. The month ended with sheetrock in, and taping and bedding well underway.

We are beginning to see the real house of our dreams: ultra energy efficiency, a view of nature on and off Earth, small enough for us to take care of but with enough room for guests, and a complete aesthetic pleasure.

We've been blessed with creative, good-hearted people all the way along this process. Here, over and over again, Rod and Kevin Peterson have suggested and implemented refinements, improvements and imaginative fixes.
